Being comprised of about 70% water humans are strongly influenced by the rhythms of nature and cycles of the moon. At first this might sound a bit far fetched but when we pause to notice the influence this cycle has on our system, energy, mood, etc, we can begin to notice the correlation. Practicing Ashtanga Yoga over time makes us more attuned to these natural cycles and observing moon days as rest days from our asana practice is one way to recognize and honour the rhythms of nature so we can live in greater harmony with it.
The full moon energy corresponds to the end of inhalation, when the force of prana is the greatest. On a physical level we might feel more energetic and emotionally feel a bit off balance or ungrounded.
The new moon energy corresponds with the end of exhalation when the apana force is dominant. This is a contracting, downward force and we might feel heavy or tired.
